Yarn Along - Not Really Reading

Joining today with Ginny for Yarn Along.

I am cheating a bit today and sharing a DVD I watched, rather than some reading. I have been doing more DVD viewing than reading at the moment as I knit, dye and skein yarn furiously in preparation for the opening of my little shop on 1st February.

The Age of Adaline is one of those movies that hubby fell asleep in the first few minutes, but I loved! Graceful, elegant, well-spoken characters, just divine.

Harrison Ford was in the movie and they also had flashbacks to him as a younger man. When I first saw the younger version, I was certain the man had to be related to Harrison Ford - he even has the same sideways smile! But after watching the bonus features, I found he is an Australian actor who they found doing Harrison Ford impersonations on Youtube. It is uncanny how much he resembles Harrison Ford.

And the costumes - oh my! As I love vintage, the costumes were wonderful to see. Many of them were actual vintage clothing of the era, borrowed from private collections. I just love to see a movie where everyone is so well-dressed.

It was a delight from start to finish. Blake Lively was just gorgeous. Well worth watching.

This is one of the knitting projects I am currently working on. It is a knitted monster from the wonderful Rebecca Danger. I am planning on turning it into a rattle toy, I think.

And does anyone recognise that yarn? Some may remember it as the ugly yarn from 2012. I had some left and ugly yarn would be the perfect yarn to make a monster! It is hard to see but the ugly yarn has little specks of lime green in it, so I dyed some lime green to make the ears and eye patch. I actually like the ugly yarn so much now that I am planning an ugly yarn dyeing session! Watch this space! I have so many ideas for yarn collections - my head is spinning!

Some of my dyeing to date. The top one is a sock yarn; the bottom two are alpaca, but it is hard to see the more subtle colours on the computer.
I will keep you posted with my progress.

  1. Hi Jayne. I'm thinking of taking up knitting again. I thought that maybe some of you're lovely variegated wool would make up a great little cardigan for my daughter. Could you email me about the possibility of purchasing some? Regards Therese.

    1. Absolutely, Therese! That is what my new little business will hopefully be! I sold some of my yarn at a Makers Market here before Christmas - it was so exciting to think that people actually want to buy it!

    2. Great. I have carpal tunnel surgery on both hands in February so I think I'll leave it until after I've healed from that. I'd love something purplish/pink. I'll contact you about it when I'm ready.

    3. Oh my, best wishes for your surgery and a speedy recovery. I will be posting details here about my 'shop' opening, so you can have a look there when you are ready.

  2. Watching DVDs whilst knitting or stitching is a wonderful thing. I haven't seen this movie, looks like a great chick flick. The wool you dyed is lovely and soft. The top one with all the variegation is beautiful...how did you dye so many colours? Your knitted monster is very cool.

    1. It is a great movie - too slow and gentle for hubby though! The top one is hand painted - takes longer but I love all the colours. I am looking forward to finishing the monster and seeing how he turns out.

    1. I agree - I just love the 40s; even in the midst of a war, they still managed to dress better than we do! I'm very excited about setting up a little shop - should be fun.

  4. I haven't had much time for reading either sometimes life just takes over. Good luck with the opening of your shop.

  5. Sounds like a good movie. I'm in the opposite though, way more reading than movie watching (I just don't have the energy left at the end of the day to sit down to a movie!) Your knit monster will be so much fun.

    1. I seem to go through phases - sometimes lots of reading, then hardly any for a while. Hope to get back to some good reading soon.

Thank you for sharing the dvd rewiew, I have wanted to see The Age of Adaline, but wasn't sure how it would turn out, I'm not good at picking out 'new movies', so I usually just watch TCM movies.

  11. The movie sounds intriguing. Harrison Ford is an excellent actor. I may do a bit of hunting for this movie on Netflix.

You have some beautiful yarn in your collection. Alas, I do not knit, but I love to look at yarn. Maybe someday...

Thanks for your visit to Thinking About Home and for sharing in our joy of a new granddaughter! :)

  14. I enjoyed The Age of Adeline, too. So much so, that I had to take my mother and aunt to see it. Thirty minutes into the movie my aunt turned to me and said, "Is this a real story?" Octogenarians! I thought the actor playing the young Harrison Ford did an excellent job, too. The monster knitting book looks interesting. I just had a grandson and I think he needs a few monsters in his life. ;)

    1. Monster knitting is great fun! Rebecca Danger's patterns can be purchased online - she has robots and other things as well as monsters. It was a wonderful movie - I could definitely watch more than once.

  15. I love how your husband fell straight asleep watching that movie! How funny. Wow, your yarn dye adventures sound so exciting. The blue grey alpaca looks especially divine - with yarn like these I am sure your new business will be a huge success. The nurse minster looks great fun too! Tania ~hedgerowharvest~

    1. I just call it the ugly yarn as it looked terrible when it first came out of the dyepot. But it turned out OK!

    1. I've nearly finished knitting all the pieces - fairly easy so far! I love all her other non-monster ones too. Just not enough time to knit all I would like to.

  18. Amazing how much those ugly things grow on us! I dyed some roving for my shop that when done I really didn't like. Lots of people loved it though.
