Independence Days Challenge: Week Thirteen

It seems a bit silly calling this week thirteen, considering my week twelve post was here, way back in September 2015. But just for the sake of it, I will keep adding on from there!

I mentioned a few posts ago that I would show you my embarrassing garden. I can make all the excuses in the world, but the truth is I just gave up. After the chickens managed to get in on numerous occasions and dig up all the seedlings and the weather became so darn hot (I am definitely a winter person!), it just all seemed to be not worth it. I am determined not to give up again!

Sharon Astyk's book spells out all the reasons to continue, and this time I will! Not that I haven't been doing anything at all, but nowhere near what I had hoped to achieve. Onwards and upwards!

There have been some successes - and I could just show you these photos and say it all looks great, but that would be cheating!

Sunflowers, zucchini, sweet corn and potatoes, as well as herbs and eggs, have all been growing well.

BUT, and here it is - the rest of the garden, well!

Remember my lovely paths? All buried by the chickens' scratching. And those weeds! All I can say is at least they are all dead from the hot summer.

This week I will not do a list, but will definitely get back to that next week. And I will be hoping to show some progress as well!

I hope everyone else's gardens and preserving and cooking have been coming along slightly better than mine!

  1. Gardens are quite the challenge. My family doesn't really plant a vegetable garden anymore because it's so much work, but I do miss it. Maybe I'll talk them into planting at least a little one this year.

    1. I like the work, especially as the boys are away most of the days now. Keeping busy!

  2. You should see our yard; it's a nighmare rental feral yard. We had to pot our edible garden when we moved last year and they are not faring well at all.

  3. I know what you mean about the heat. My garden (in it's second year) is much smaller and therefore easier to look after. One thing we really try to do when planting is put down a quite deep layer of mulch. We use sugar Cane. Often going back after the plants are established to make a deeper layer. It really helps with water retention and weed control. Last year I had heaps of tomatoes but lost most of them in the end to fruit fly. This year my crop isn't as big but at least I've been able to harvest every one due to mosquito netting. I'm waiting now for the cooler weather to plant Kale (my friend gave me some seed from her garden) and the choy sum that went to seed early in summer. At least your plot will be well fertilised from the chooks for next season:)

    1. Sounds like your garden is going great! I cannot wait to be able to harvest tomatoes. I use straw as it is cheap here and sugar cane is super expensive.
