Yarn Along and Classics Club

Joining in today with Ginny for Yarn Along.

I have started reading my first book from my Classics Club list, Gone With The Wind. Thanks Therese, for the suggestion!

This is my mum's copy of the book, which I first read when I was about 13. I think this would be about my third or fourth re-reading. I am really looking forward to enjoying it all over again.

Work on the Amy Pinafore is coming along steadily. At the moment, it is great TV knitting - just round and round and round! I love the ruffles, although next time I may space them out a bit more so you can see some of the pink between each ruffle. I am happy with the way the yarn colours are working as well, especially the tonal pink.

And here is my little (or not so little any more!) Whirlwind. First week back at school and he was awarded the first Emmett Award for the year. So proud of him. The Emmett Award is for academic achievement - he really loves learning!

When you are awarded Emmett, you are able to sign the bear, so he was super excited to be the first signature for the year.

  1. Oh, the Amy pinafore is so pretty. I love all those frills. Gone with the Wind is a great book, isn't it. I always loved the movie as well. Congratulations to your son. Isn't it great he loves to learn

    1. Thanks! I love the movie as well - planning to watch that as a reward for reading through the whole book again!
Hopefully his love of learning will stay with him - he comes straight home and wants to do maths because he loves it SO much!

    1. Oh, you should read it or definitely watch the movie - fantastic! Just for the costumes.
I finished the body last night, so just the bodice to go. Hope to finish it tonight.

  4. That's awesome about Emmett! How exciting for him to be the first signature!

Gone with the Wind is on my list, but I've never read it before. I do love the movie despite a couple of imo miss-castings.

    1. He was very excited!
I would love to hear your opinion on the mis-castings in the movie - see if we match up!

    2. Wellllll, I admit that as much as I love Leslie Howard, he just did not work as Ashley. Clark Gable was an ideal fit and I liked Vivien Leigh, but Leslie didn't quite fit. It was really sad, actually, because I do like him as an actor. I'm also not 100% sold on Olivia de Havilland. I usually love her, but I think she was a little too saccharine. Then again, I've never read the book so I'm not sure what these characters are even supposed to feel like.

      What about your mis-casting?

    3. Those are the two I would query as well, although they do seem to suit the characters in the book quite well.
Admittedly, not Leslie Howard's best role - he was fantastic in The Scarlet Pimpernel and Pygmalion - but I think I am determined to love him as Ashley simply because of his death only a few years later.
Olivia de Havilland - I could definitely take her or leave her in this role, a bit too simpering, but I guess she had to play it like that to contrast with Scarlett.
Absolute stand outs were, of course, Mammy and Prissy - "I don't know nothing 'bout birthing no babies" has to be the best delivered line ever! It is sad to think that she could not attend the movie's premiere as it was held in a whites-only theatre.

  5. Hope you enjoy the read. Love the pinafore and colours. What ply are you knitting it in? I think I may try doing a little bolero jacket as my first forage back into knitting for my daughter.

    1. Thanks! It is 4ply - I just like knitting in finer yarn. There are some gorgeous bolero patterns on Ravelry - that will be lovely.
