Happy Birthday To My Littlest Man

Cuddlepie had his fourth birthday party today - his actual birthday is on Wednesday.

He had a ball with his little friends and we had a great time catching up with their parents.

Party food!
Miss Ballerina and I made the cake he had choosen himself from my trusty, well-loved Women's Weekly birthday cake book.

See, it is so well-loved, it is in pieces!
My mum gave me this book when Miss Butterfly was born as this was the one all mine and my brother and sister's birthday cakes were cooked from. It is so lovely to look through it each time there is another birthday and remember all the other birthdays for which the different cakes have been made.
The cake Cuddlepie chose was also the one I made for Miss Butterfly's first birthday, nearly 20 years ago!

Cuddlepie said he loved it and he had the best birthday ever. In fact, the word he used was awesome!

It was a cold day here today, so the party was indoors. It was lovely to see all the kids just having fun playing. I didn't organise any games or activities, no bouncy castles or magicians, just plain old-fashioned playing! It is astonishing to me how competitive parents have become with birthday parties - it seems sometimes it is not even about the birthday child any more, but about doing one better than the last party.
We had a lovely time, and once everyone was gone and the noise had died down, the dog felt comfortable coming inside.

Do you think the dog can get any closer to the fire?!

    1. This is certainly the age that they come out with some classic sayings! Thanks for the birthday wishes.

  2. I tried to keep birthday parties simple too. A few games, a table of fun food and I must say, I liked making up the treat bags for guests to take home. It brings back good memories. :)

  3. I have that hand me down woman's weekly birthday cake book as well including the raggedy torn pages. I remember Mum cooing me the mini mouse cake for my 7th and I made the mouse ran up the clock cake for my 2nd daughter when she was 3. So much better than the recent birthday cake books they've released recently. Your cake looked amazing.

    1. Thanks! I have had a look at their new cake books and they use different icing - not as good as this old book!

  4. I agree. I have one my sister bought me a while back. The roll out icing makes for a professional look but not as nice to eat as butter icing imo. This year I made a superman cake for my 3yo man and the icing looked great but didn't taste nice.

    1. I prefer the buttercream icing as I like that it looks homemade. I don't like the rollout icing, except for Christmas cakes. I do use it for them.

  5. "The best b-day ever" -- how adorable! Today is my little granddaughter's 2nd b-day!! B-day wishes to your boy and amazed that you've got a fire in your wood stove...but you are now in winter, are you not? It's supposed to be 100 here over the weekend. Ugh!

    1. Happy birthday to your grandaughter! So gorgeous!
Yes, winter and raining all week so far here. I just looked up what 100F is - that is pretty unpleasant! It is 44F here at the moment.

  6. Incredible article!! Your son is looking very cute in this photograph. You are such a great mom who made all these amazing arrangements. I also want to host a grand party on my son’s birthday. Could you please recommend some good event rooms for rent in California?
