A Well-Planned Pantry

I wish I could say I had a well-planned pantry, but alas, no! Since we moved to a much smaller house, my pantry space is limited and spread out over numerous areas. It is something I am working on planning better, as the space is limited so really has to be utilised well.

I am really being inspired by the Prepare Your Pantry series at Strangers & Pilgrims On Earth. This blog is truly wonderful. There is so much information on homemaking, homeschooling, marriage and motherhood, herbal medicines, cooking and much more.
The pantry series has entries such as:-

Plus these gorgeous free printable labels.

I mention this as I think that an organised pantry and successful meal planning would go hand in hand. The ten reasons for having a well-stocked pantry above are all so true. It just makes sense, especially when you see news reports of people running out of food when cut off due to a natural disaster. Australia recently experienced flooding in New South Wales and many people were isolated for days, some for a week or more. It is astonishing how many had virtually no supplies to cope with such a situation. I will admit to being a prepper of sorts - not your hardcore stashing guns and ammunition in a bunker type - I just believe we all need to be prepared for a situation where 'they' may not come to our rescue immediately.

Looking at these images gives me pantry envy!

And you should see the pantry in this post! My Big Fat Hippie Pantry (great title!)

I just love looking at other peoples' rows of canned goods. Weird, huh? But I know I'm not the only one who loves to peek into other pantries and join in on canning adventures!

You can even get the T-shirt!

Or the mug, if you prefer!

  1. Jayne, I've nominated you for a blog award which you can read about here: http://happyindolevalley.blogspot.com/2015/05/seven-things-ten-people-and-award.html
    Congrats from me to you!
I'm a well-stocked pantry type of gal, too. Living as far out as we do, it's really a necessity. I do one big shopping each month and then resupply once each week with dairy, fresh fruits and veggies, and anything I didn't realize we were low on. I enjoy reading "Strangers and Pilgrims" too. :)

    1. Wow, thanks Lisa! I am heading over right now to have a look! Thanks so much, it is so lovely to know that people out there are reading my random thoughts!

  2. I see what you mean about pantry envy! I have been building a pantry/stockpile in my basement. I ordered some sturdy shelves at Sam's and I am building items we regularly use as they go on sale. However, we are doing a "Low Spend Month" for May and I am using up items from the fridge, freezer and pantry (in that order). I am also using garden harvest.

  3. I am still trying to work out where I can fit a stockpile. My hubby would go nuts if I started using under the bed or bedroom wardrobes!
I popped over to your blog - looks like just my cup of tea!
I love the Low Spend Month idea. I have called this year my Year of No Superfluous Spending and it is working out really well so far. It is amazing how much spending you can reduce or eliminate just by planning better.
    Lovely to 'meet' you!

  5. Hey Jayne, I have pantry envy now. I have an outside room with shelves that I use for my preserves and brewing, but it isn't very fancy, but that's ok. Thanks for sharing this at Good Morning Mondays. A question, do you do canning or just use a fowlers?? Thanks and blessings

    1. I was using the garage at our old house, but not ideal due to the temperature changes. I would dearly love a root cellar or underground storage area of some sort. I do canning. I used to have a Fowlers but now do water bath canning. I haven't tried pressure canning though!

  6. Oh Jayne you must give it a go, it is so easy and very helpful for keeping vegetables and meat. Let me know how you go if you try it. Blessings

    1. I will. I have borrowed a book from the library (a few times now!) called Root Cellaring so I think I know what I would build. There are just so many projects to plan and get done!
