Vintage Yarn Along

Joining today with Ginny for Yarn Along.

I have been working away on the Shoulders jumper from the November 1933 Stitchcraft. It becomes slightly boring, posting about big knit projects as they are the same week to week! This week I will be starting the project from February 1934, so I hopefully will have something else to show as well.

The pattern doesn't really show up well until it is blocked. It will look like this:

For reading, my apologies for yet another Austen P&P spin off! I just can't get enough of Jane (and all derivatives of Jane!)

Mary Bennet: The Forgotten Sister by Jennifer Paynter looks like a great read. I haven't started yet, but I just know I will love it! I will let you know next week.
I always felt a bit sorry for poor Mary - she really is the forgotten sister. But Austen uses her voice as a sort of Greek chorus, echoing and driving home the character flaws and problems faced by the main characters. This makes her come off as self-righteous, particularly as she is generally lecturing about something of which she has no direct experience.
This book sounds really interesting, as it paints Mary in a whole different light. Behind that quiet exterior, she was apparently engaged in a secret love affair with a musician who plays at the balls the Bennet sisters attend. Who knew?!

And if you love Austen and other classics, you should head to this wonderful blog, Old-Fashioned Charm. Here, Miss Laurie blogs about all things Austen, period dramas, classic literature and all things old-fashioned. It is a truly lovely blog.

  1. Fun looking knitting project. I love historical knitting. I'm a big Jane Austen fan too so I'm excited about the book you shared and will be presently checking the library for it! Thanks!

  4. I love that take on Mary Bennett! I always felt bad for her, the ignored middle child. I'll need to check out the book!

    1. Me too! It always made me cringe when she was shunned by the others - and that piano playing scene id just painful!

  5. I just queued a vintage sweater to knit for my husband. I think it was from the 50's!

    1. I look forward to seeing that! I gave up knitting for hubby years ago - anything I knit is never quite right!

  6. Love the twisted stitches in the ribbing! I've seen so much blue today as I've visited Yarn Along posts...yours is a pretty, soft colorway that I bet will turn out to be just perfect for your vintage knit! :)

    1. Thank you. It is a lovely yarn - wool, bamboo and silk. The pattern is so simple as well - always a bonus!

  7. Mary always makes me so sad too! But also a little annoyed. Haha! Your knitting is beautiful, the pattern is going to be lovely! As a side note, I just remembered that you had nominated me for Lovely Blog award and I will plan to get to that this evening. I saw that comment on the fly one day and it totally flew right out of my head! Thank you for your sweet words, I will make a post on it soon! With gardening, traveling, knitting and remodeling my brain is going so many directions!

    1. Any time! I will look forward to seeing the painting you are doing! There is always so much to do, isn't there? Things are always flying in and out of my head! I have started being a real list maker, as it is just too hard to remember everything.

  8. Shoulders is an oat name for that sweater, it is wild. Can't wait to see it finished!

    1. I think it will be a while of posting boring photos of the same knitting! 4 ply on small needles! In only knitted 3 rows last night. Slow and steady, I guess!

  9. That's an impressive knit, and the yarn sounds gorgeous! I hope you model it when you finish :)

    1. Thank you! I don't like photos, but I think I will have to model this one! If it fits, that is - I'm not sure how much faith I have in my re-sizing skills!

    1. Thank you! I am a bit scared of the result - once you make it public on your blog, you have to keep going with it, even if it is a disaster! Fingers crossed!
